I said what I said.
Lets wait for more reports to come out to determine what's "official" and what isn't. Remember, Sweden is 6 hours ahead.

Yeah but you can't sign somebody until the team actually announces it as official. The articles on Sportsnet and TSN say "Jonas is expected to sign with the Leafs today" You can't just get a head start because of it.

The article actually reads: An announcement is expected as early as today as "The Monster" signed off on a 1-year, $900,000 to start the 09-10 season backing up Vesa Toskola.
Signed off = past tense.
so just for the record...

www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=283954'Jonas Gustavsson is expected to sign...' I'm not even all that interested in him (waiting for my pick to come to me in about twenty minutes) I just don't think it's been made clear. Once the team he's signing with makes the announcement of his signing, then and only then will I accept it as confirmed. It's only fair to the rest of the league, otherwise you could pull articles from weeks ago that stated strong cases for Toronto as 'the team' and if he signs you'd be 'right' but that's not right.

Is this joke of a site supposed to be more credible as a source because it's in Swedish? ;D Funny, I don't see why you can't wait for an official announcement from the team (Leafs)? I promise I won't sign him.

I really don't see the discrepancy here. www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/07/07/monster_maple_leafs/SIGNED OFF. ALSO managed to complete contract extension. The rules of the league don't require me to wait for a press conference or a ceremonial dinner. And I won't wait for an "announcement" because I havent slept since June 1st. Shoo.

I can shenanigans and B.S. Just like Brunnstrom last year, Gustavsson is a guy that shouldn't be up for "dibbs" just because you stalk Swedish newspapers. He goes into the waiver draft.

If Gustavsson goes into the waiver draft, why didnt Bozek, Gilroy and Hanson???
It's the same situation.

Yes, that is credible, it's from the NHL, it states Toronto has actually signed him. At that point it wasn't 'expected' but done. I can shenanigans and B.S. Just like Brunnstrom last year, Gustavsson is a guy that shouldn't be up for "dibbs" just because you stalk Swedish newspapers. He goes into the waiver draft. I agree with this completely. I think Mark's saying both cases were BS (Brunnstrom & Gustavsson) that they both should have been placed in the waiver draft. If Gustavsson goes into the waiver draft, why didnt Bozek, Gilroy and Hanson??? It's the same situation. They should really also go into the waiver draft. These types of signings after the season is over by teams shouldn't count towards 'prospect' FA signings. Although didn't Hanson play last year? If he played then that situation isn't the same and he should be available.

I was against the "after season signings" from the start (I even called shenanigans the very first time it was used), but Derrick, one day, unanimously decided to create that rule. Also, I believe that after the Brunnstrom situation (like 3 teams simultaneously tried to sign him), there was either a rule put in place (or at least a discussion or gentleman's agreement) that future situations with "high profile prospects" signed in this manner, they'd just simply go into the waiver draft (or at least he should've been made available to the prospect draft since it was obvious to everyone he was probably going to sign with a team while the draft was going on... heck I even tried drafting Gustavsson with my 15th prospect pick because I knew within a few days he'd have an NHL team, but Derrick said no... I wonder why).
Also, this signing wasn't like the Gilroy, Bozek, etc. (aka Midnight Madness signings) because those guys were all owned by teams for a while... basically people knew those guys were up for grabs and any team had an equal chance of signing them. Gustavsson was signed to the NHL and Derrick immediately tried to get him simply because he was the first one to read a news article. Other teams didn't really have an equal chance at signing him since the limiting factor was reading the news.

Was it against the rules though? I think the initial source was kind of suspect, but that doesn't seem to be the issue. If Derrick didn't break any rules, then there's nothing that can be done about Gustavsson, other than implement a rule for future situations (which I think needs to be done at the very least). If he's within the rules though, we have to accept to eat shit on this one.
I glanced at the rulebook a bit earlier, and I don't know whether there was a violation. I'm curious about section 8E (updated in this year's rulebook) which says: It seems to me like it applies, depending on what's meant by minor leaguer; if it's meant to include prospects. Gustavsson would be a non-AHL/NHL experienced player with prospect status.
