This thread will be used to facilitate open-ended discussions pertaining to rule changes and all other issues that came up over the course of this past fantasy season.

Boy, this thread is super lively! First issue has been posted, an easy one, to get the ball rolling. nafhl2.proboards.com/thread/1195/farm-team-violationsRead it over, think it over, give us some additional thoughts if you have any and vote! We have about three weeks left before the start of the Waiver Draft so let's try to resolve some of these issues to create a better, and fairer, league! I'd like to have each poll decided within 48 hours (so please be active!) but if they aren't there may be over lapping polls as time is of the essence. As an aside, kind of funny how some league 'rules' are followed and enforced but don't actually explicitly exist, to the detriment of the league, and yet others that do exist aren't followed or enforced. Isn't that so funny? 20) Reprimands F) Failure to specify a farm transaction in a farm transactions thread within 24 hours of the transaction will result in the player or players being forfeited to suspended waivers.

What’s really funny is how you complain certain rules are “too strict” and then in the next breath advocate for the league needing to follow more rules more strictly. Which is it? Seems like you just want to complain and highlight rules that are most beneficial for you and not necessarily more beneficial for the entire league. If you had the league’s best interest in mind you would approach these issues from a more positive perspective instead of constantly trying to cause conflict with your cynical tone and sarcastic comments.

It's not about whether rules are strict or not but rather whether rules even exist to begin with, are they clearly defined? Do they ultimately help the league? Also, why are other rules not followed that actually do exist? Shouldn't Mitch have lost Meier no matter what after that controversy? Why are managers losing young prospects due to a poorly thought out technicality? Wouldn't these managers have 'made a mistake' as well under the Babysitter Clause? Surely you don't believe they knew about it and did it on purpose, right? So what's the difference?
Secondly, how does anything benefit me and me alone? The idea is to have everybody run under the same exact rules. You keep coming back to this security blanket with virtually every single reply to me like you don't have an original thought in your brain anymore. You act like a tyrannical dictator much of the time and that will be met with resistance, negativity and yes some sarcasm and comedy. You ruined last season and wasted everybody's time. You didn't win a thing and I don't want to see it happen again.

The fact that you included "You ruined last season and wasted everybody's time. As a result, you want to cause as much drama and make my job as hard as possible. Who won the league literally has NOTHING to do with certain rules that need discussed.

You attacked me first with your previous canned response post and so you were met with resistance and negativity, why would you expect anything less? I didn't lose. You didn't win. You cheated throughout the entire year. Right from the beginning with Shea Weber being illegally rostered. Everything being even you wouldn't even sniff a chance at defeating me and that's the hard truth you can't accept. Adding/changing rules is an attempt to make sure things are even and fair, if it doesn't directly relate then it certainly indirectly relates.

You don’t get to taunt, antagonize, and criticize me or anybody else for the sole purpose of eliciting a response and then cry foul and take a victim stance when you get a response. That isn’t how it works. I didn’t “attack” you, I simply responded to your overtly negative baiting post. To which I will say again now, who won the championship has NOTHING to do with anything we are discussing. Let it go. It destroys any credibility your arguments might have.

I'm not a victim, I'm in a fight, we are throwing jabs, I'm not gonna back down when a harsher jab is thrown at me. I'm going to hit you harder than you hit me. I've given ample opportunity for you to back up, I don't want to be arguing with you, I want to be friends. I would hardly call my original post 'overtly negative' but rather somewhat sarcastic, comical and good natured yet critical. The credibility of my arguments lie in their content and not with my criticism of you.

So what do you guys think about the more critical changes the league could undergo? I've thought a lot about it and I'm stuck in the middle of what should, or could, be changed. Do you guys think the league could use a change of stat categories? Is that too much of a change to undergo that would completely alter the roots of the league? Or do you believe it's a necessary step in the direction of the inevitable evolution of the league? I'm thinking we'd either keep the PIM category or change it to Hits. That's its own thing as I don't believe we need both. Added categories I've thought about would include Face Off Wins, Blocks & Saves. This would keep the Skater & Goaltender categories at its already established overall category percentages, going from 8 Skater & 4 Goaltending stats to 10 Skater & 5 Goaltending stats. 66.66% Skater stats to 33.3% Goaltending Stats. I'm thinking those categories would improve and highlight the defensive aspect of the game, which is severely lacking currently. Do you guys like those categories? Are there any other categories you like or would suggest over some of these? Another issue I've thought about is the total starts issue. Do you like the possibility of having extra starts over your opponent week to week through a greater understanding of the NHL schedule and how you can utilize it? Or do you believe every team should play in an equal and similar amount of games against opponents showcasing a greater player and team prowess based around actual games played? We could potentially implement a Games Played limit for Skaters. We have an automatic Minimum Goaltending Starts limit per week, should we have a Maximum Skater Starts limit per week? Let us know guys! There isn't much more to change, minimal and superficial issues at best, great job this off-season with some much needed changes, solidifications and clarifications! Very much looking forward to the upcoming season! This goes out to Derrick, and Robyn, and Chris, and Mitch, and you, and you, and you, and... [Skit - Trevin Jones] Welcome back, we're here on Bad Boy Television, and I'm Trevin Jones and I've been conversing with the Mad Rapper and quite frankly, he's very mad. I wouldn't be completely opposed to changing some of the categories but I think it would be something that we would have to talk about this offseason and me sure to give everyone a full season to make adjustments. As in not maybe agreeing to new categories now and not implementing them until 20-21 season. That way we're able to give managers more time to adjust on the fly as I'm sure all of us decided on our keepers using only the currently used categories.

Let us know guys! There isn't much more to change, minimal and superficial issues at best, great job this off-season with some much needed changes, solidifications and clarifications! Very much looking forward to the upcoming season! So just to recap. You want to tremendously and disproportionately increase the value of Centers in the league by adding face off wins as a category? Add additional goalie categories that would require rostering more goalies? And as a contradiction, introduce a minimum games played for skaters? Call me crazy, but it just sounds like you are still mad about the things you have been complaining about all summer and are trying to sell a bunch of changes that would only benefit you with nice words and implausible scenarios. With 5 keeper centers on your roster, having face-off wins would be a significant boost for you. However, it makes very little sense to have FOW as a category outside of that, whereas it would devalue wingers disproportionately. As a position, there are more Centers than any other forward position. To accommodate for this, our league has 3 slots dedicated to the Center on our rosters, giving them the added "value" that is desired without devaluing the other forward positions. Saves as a category only serves to promote rostering more goalies, most of which would be waiver wire fodder and/or backups. This does not enrich the league and incentivizes "stat-chasing." Hits as a category is similar in nature. It promotes adding waiver wire fodder, streaming, and "stat-chasing." All of which are things I want to keep out of this league. You can't consistently go out and find a 25 PPP guy on the waiver wire, or someone who has 300 sogs, or 40 points and 100 PIMS, but you can easily find irrelevant players that don't do anything but hits or backups who only get saves that you could "stream" to gain an unfair advantage in a couple categories while handcuffing teams who are unable to drop their superstar players. The minimum skaters is not feasible in any way, shape, or form. We do not control the NHL schedule. Some weeks your players have more starts, some weeks they have less. It all evens out in the end. Furthermore, such a proposal is especially not feasible in combination with 'saves' as a category, whereas that would require a team to roster at least 3 goalies to be competitive, in a world where there are barely enough goalies to go around as-is. The minimum games played for a goalie is in place to prevent a manager from playing 1 goalie game, getting a shutout, and winning all the categories. Just because you came up against a goalie who had back to back shutouts and allowed only 1 goal in his 3rd game does not mean we should up-end the near perfect balance we have in the current league categories. It happens. The league has been meticulously planned since it's inception and the distribution of categories is no different. Ones that have been included have been included for a reason, and ones that have not be included have not been included for a reason. The roster positions and the categories we have are significant reasons why the league is so competitive and fun for everybody. I do not support changing or adding any rules. It would be a step-backward in my opinion.

Yeah, let's go ahead and recap because none of that looks right! How exactly would adding FOW as a category 'tremendously' and 'disproportionately' increase the value of Centers in the league? Didn't you literally just say Centers were the least valuable position in the league with Goaltenders, Defensemen & Wingers being ahead of them? So a position with the weakest positional value and a position with an abundance of players? Would a guy with only one Keeper Center really have the proper respect for the position that it deserves? Center is the most critical and vital position in the game and it isn't represented, there's a reason all the very best players are Centers and most of the top players in the history of the game were Centers. FOW drives the play, lots of strategy involved with it be it in the offensive, defensive or neutral zone, it's like possession in soccer. It's a skill that should be respected and admired. Yes, more goalies should be rostered. We have 12 teams. There are 31 starting goalies in the league and that doesn't even account for 1A/1B scenarios or backup goalies who play well or prospect goalies seeing time. Nobody should be rostering fewer than 3 goalies as it's a cheater strategy to acquire more Skater starts over an opponent, another problem as nobody should win because they had more games to play than an opponent, it's neither impressive nor fair. Hoooow is it a contradiction to implement a Skater starts limit? It would be a maximum limit and not a minimum limit. Ooooooohp, there it is again, security blanket, the fifth sentence! Again, you should really stop using that. It just makes you look scared, weak and unable to compete...uh! Couldn't I then, by that same logic, just discredit your entire opinion against FOW because you only have 1 Keeper Center? Obviously you don't like the category because you're ill prepared at the position? I mean...I have 3 Keeper Centers on my team and not 5, let's not get ahead of ourselves, alright? I'm well stocked at every position so you could conceivably use this excuse for any stat category to see me get an 'unfair' boost despite everybody being able to utilize the same stuff. Basically, if I have any 'advantage' to speak of it's because I worked for it and it is well deserved, everybody has the same opportunities to improve. It makes all the sense in the world to have FOW as a category, it's a big part of the game like already detailed, I love watching faceoffs and it would be fun to count statistics with what I'm having a good time watching. It wouldn't devalue wingers whatsoever, keep in mind that wingers take faceoffs too as Centers are routinely kicked out of the dot for violations. Wingers are already well known as more valuable than Centers so rather than 'devaluing' Wingers this would be an attempt to put Centers on an even playing field with them. Having 3 Center slots indeed helps to spread the over abundance of Centers throughout our league but it doesn't help to improve their actual worth. There are more Centers available in the Waiver Draft than any other position, maybe even combined, and Centers who are actually pretty damn good. What is 'stat-chasing'? Another hype word that means very little? Aren't we always 'stat-chasing'? No, again, it's about balance and the ability to think the game in multiple directions rather than in a straight line. Yes, it would promote rostering more goalies, that's the point. Nobody should be rostering 2 goalies. There are plenty of goalies to utilize. Setting and forgetting is both lame and lazy. It's not interesting or fun but if that's how you want to play it I'm fully prepared to block any lame duck 'strategies' you guys want to utilize. I'll do whatever I have to under the written rules to make sure nobody ever gets an unfair advantage over me again. I'm looking to improve the league's rules for everybody, to have fair and balanced rules, to have fun and interesting rules, some new blood. Having a guy just hitting for your team is the same exact thing as having a guy just accumulating PIM for your team. It doesn't work, again, it's about balance. PIM is a negative stat and shouldn't be rewarded as positive. Hitting is one of the best parts of the game just like in Football, is impressive and leads to both defensive and offensive plays developing. I love watching hits so it would be fun to be able to count stats along with something I enjoy watching. Streaming wouldn't exist under my rules because you would have a certain amount of games you could play over a week and it would be your responsibility to find the proper balance with your team to strategize and accumulate the most stat category wins. It's maximum skaters, or maximum starts, and yes it is completely feasible. There's an option for it in Yahoo, one of the main options that you can set when making your league. Lots of leagues use this. It does not 'even out in the end' at all, which has been proven. You had a very successful record against your opponents for starts, 17-6-0. I had a losing record for starts against my opponents, 10-12-1. Even if it did even out that doesn't mean it was even week to week throughout the season...meaning unfair advantages were happening left and right and it's not impressive. Why would you be against this anyway? You've lobbied for cutting out 'streaming' for years because of an unfair advantage in starts, even locking Playoff Rosters because of it. This would just take it to the next level, making it even closer to even. It's currently far from a 'perfect balance' and to claim that it is is just being willfully ignorant of facts and reality. Having this in place would also give us more room for strategic flexibility and there would be no need for a locked Playoff Roster. You have a certain number of starts to utilize and that's it. Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the stat categories already chosen before you had even become Commissioner? Did you choose the stat categories? I mean, I see more value in FOW, Blocks & Saves over PIM, +/-, SHP & GWG. I love seeing faceoffs, blocked shots & saves in games and it's sensible to include impressive skill driven feats like these in fantasy. Those other categories are just fine but I believe the categories lean too far in the direction of offense and there's more to the game than offense. Like I said before, it would be fun to count stats for things you really enjoy seeing. Do you not enjoy seeing these things in hockey? This is the way it is and that's why it's fun for everybody? You're speaking for the entire league? There are many ways to have fun and be competitive even if this is already fun and competitive. You would have been better served just saying you don't like changing it up in this way because it would destroy the roots, that's what I'm having trouble with, what, are we gonna count the first 13 seasons as the first era and because of a change in categories you count the new era separately because it's changed? I hate that thought, specifically for changing/adding stat categories. That's why I'm still in the middle with it, I'd love to hear what others have to say because my opinion isn't unmovable but nothing you said convinced me of the other side very well. That's weak sauce Derr. Do not enter that sauce into the county fair because it is weak.

I would be on board with adding FOW and Blocks. These are two fundamental elements of hockey. Goalies can stay the same in my opinion but adding more categories to skaters would create more decision making on nights you have all players available to start. I think creating an odd number of categories would also help to stop ties in the playoffs where GOALS ends up being the decider. I’ve brought up FOW last time this came around. More stat categories also add some excitement in watching week to week matchups. Just my two cents. Let’s hear from some other GM’s.

I would also be on board with adding FOW and Blocks. Saves would be cool but that cat sorta just comes down to which team had the most goalie starts. Something I've done in the past for this is rather than having a GAA cat, having a Saves and GA. It adds another cat to give more value to goalies, and give you both a positive and a negative to having more goalie starts. Could be interesting.
Also in favour of trading PIMs (negative stat) for Hits (positive stat). But regardless I'm all for adding more Cats. More things to watch and get excited about.

By adding more skater categories, goalies do not “stay the same.” They are devalued and not worth as much because they contribute less to all categories percentage wise. Additionally, ties in the playoffs are not decided by goals. Ties in the playoffs are decided by regular season win percentage against your opponent.

Also in favour of trading PIMs (negative stat) for Hits (positive stat). But regardless I'm all for adding more Cats. More things to watch and get excited about. Adding both saves and goals against is counterintuitive. That is basically what GAA is already condensed into one stat. With two individual stats, a manager could pitch one to win the other. That is impossible with GAA. Your goalies actually have to be good. GAA is a stat that rewards the best goalies over the course of the week/year because a goalie has to perform consistently and not just get lucky. I’m not interested in lateral categories or teams rostering/streaming bad players in attempt to win “non-skilled” categories. Saves is a category that devalues the most talented goaltenders and is extremely dependent on quantity over quality. Adding more offensive categories skews the ratio between skater categories and goalie categories which makes goalies worth less. FOW adds too much value to centers disproportionately to other forwards and would require us to drop to 2 instead of 3 spots on the roster. ‘Hits’ is akin to ‘saves’ in that it promotes rostering bad players/waiver fodder and is a quantity over quality stat. Of all the suggestions, ‘blocks’ is the only that I consider even remotely a realistic possibility. While “more things to check” and “excitement” are all fine and dandy, those two things are not synonymous with a well distributed set of categories that work in perfect harmony to create a fun and balanced league. I’m not willing to sacrifice practicality for “entertainment.” Anybody can say “I think we need this or that.” But nobody is giving concrete examples for why any of these things would be better for the league. Yes. Faceoffs are a huge part of the game. So are saves, hits, and blocks. But this is fantasy hockey and those things (among others) do not directly translate into our game from the real NHL. Some managers in NAFHL (myself included) have been building their teams for over a decade under the current stat categories. Adding or subtracting from those would negate all the work that has been done by these managers and would require an entire or substantial redraft of the league.

I was just saying if we were to add Saves as a cat we would need to have GA otherwise it's just a game of who gets more goalie starts each week. While having both could be abused by streaming the same could be said about any of the non-scoring cats (+/-, PIMs, Hits, Blocks) but a huge difference is also the pool of available goalies is much more limited compared to players. The only way a manager could "pitch one to win another" is by streaming the very limited pool of remaining goaltenders which is already not allowed. Adding the goalie stat would allow for more skater stats while keeping the ratio the same as well if that is where the issue lies.
Saves hardly devalue the most talented goaltenders. It rewards the goaltenders that have a larger workload because of the increased numbers of scoring opportunities. While it is a bit of "quantity of quality", it showcases the goalie's talent and individual effort much more than GAA. Last season Murray posted a higher S% than Fleury, Bobrovsky, Holtby, and Andersen and is he better than all of those guys? GAA is less about the goalies performing and more about the how good defensive core is in front of them. GAA has no regard to the workload that each goalie is put through which is why I'm much more in support of the S/GA tandem. But for me its either the both of them or just GAA.

I’m not interested in lateral categories or teams rostering/streaming bad players in attempt to win “non-skilled” categories. Which categories are 'non-skilled'? PIM? FOW adds too much value to centers disproportionately to other forwards and would require us to drop to 2 instead of 3 spots on the roster How is it disproportionate? Other than Centers being worth less than all other positions disproportionately? Do you not see a need to improve the least valuable position in our league? Why would this require us to drop to 2 spots on the roster? The two issues have nothing to do with each other. The reason we have 3 spots is because there is an over abundance of available Centers. ‘Hits’ is akin to ‘saves’ in that it promotes rostering bad players/waiver fodder and is a quantity over quality stat. How? PIM promotes rostering bad players/waiver fodder. Again, PIM bad, Hits good. But nobody is giving concrete examples for why any of these things would be better for the league. Pretty sure a bunch of good reasons and opinions have been given man, none of which were given by you. Yes. Faceoffs are a huge part of the game. So are saves, hits, and blocks. But this is fantasy hockey and those things (among others) do not directly translate into our game from the real NHL. Why? They're stat categories. Interesting ones. Fun ones. Some managers in NAFHL (myself included) have been building their teams for over a decade under the current stat categories. Adding or subtracting from those would negate all the work that has been done by these managers and would require an entire or substantial redraft of the league. Yeah, I've been building my team for this period of time as well. I can adjust just fine. It wouldn't negate a thing. All of the work you've put in would still be there. You'd just have more work to do. A redraft of any kind is not necessary and is a tactic you're using to threaten the league and its managers.
