I was just wondering why we decided to only include 2 IR slots for the roster limit? I'm guessing its to prevent "IR abuse" (where you just stash guys on IR and just leave them there for as long as you need). However, I don't think that really does anything to prevent abusing the IR system because teams with healthy players can just sign & stash guys on IR without any problem at all.
I just think that it might be a good idea to increase the roster limit for IR players because it seriously hurts some teams if they have a couple of players who get injured. After two seasons, I noticed that a couple of teams always seem to have 2 or more players on the IR just because of freak accidents or certain players are just injury-prone. When this happens, a team is hurt two times:
1) their starting player is injured and the GM loses his production
2) the injured player takes up a roster spot, so that production can't be replaced
If faced with many injuries, how can a team possibly hope to do well during the season when facing a healthy team? What is a team supposed to do to remain competitive? Are they supposed to release an all-star player into free agency simply so they can sign a waiver-wire quality player because of a 2 or 3 week injury? Having an IR limit of only 2 has no advantages and it only hurts teams who have injury-prone players.
I know this may seem a little biased since i currently have 4 IR listed players, but I know this affects more teams than just me. Last year I remember a few teams being at or over the IR limit and this season a couple of teams are constantly having 2 IR players. An IR roster limit of 2 can hurt teams and make them less competitive. How can an injury-riddled team compete with a completely healthy team? Hypothetically, should a GM release stars like Havlat, Gaborik, Lehtonen, Bertuzzi, etc. just so they can sign Rory Fitzpatrick off the IR list for a week or two? Isn't it punishment enough to have these talented players not playing? Do we need to punish GMs a second time for taking chances on injury-prone players?
I don't know if its too late in the season for the commissioner to make the proper changes in yahoo, but at least for future seasons this can be addressed. I suggest making the IR limit at least 5 in order to guarantee that GMs don't have to worry about having too many IR players. Call me selfish for talking about this only after I have 4 players on the injured reserve, but I think this issue is a problem that can affect a lot more teams in the near future.
