The San Jose Sharks officially announced their team captain on Thursday, going into the 2009/2010 season with high hopes and a more focused core pushing leadership as a key element to their success in the future. Phenom Sidney Crosby (Stanley Cup Winner 08/09) will dawn the 'C' for the Sharks, the first Captain in franchise history. General Manager Nos had this to say...

This 'news' simply makes it official to the masses. Sid has always been the team's leader on and off the ice since the team's inception. He exudes everything we would want in a leader, heart, passion, determination, elite skills as well as his elite hockey sense. He makes everybody around him better. That's what a captain should be and Sid carries it out in the best way.

In addition to captain Sidney Crosby three alternate captains have been named including Jarome Iginla, Rick Nash, and Zdeno Chara. When questioned about the excess in alternate captains General Manager Nos had this to say...

It's my firm belief that a team should have a leader at every position, which is why we chose to address captaincy in this way. While on the ice only the permitted amount of alternate captains will wear the 'A' but they will switch off between one another for different games. Even Roberto [Luongo] is thought of in this way, his leadership is as important as Sid's but we chose to keep it limited to skaters because of the NHL's absurd rule policy. Roberto knows where he stands with the team and will continue to lead by example.

The captaincy issue comes as no surprise, Nos seems to be of the mind that its importance lies within the dressing room and with the team. The San Jose Sharks go into the 2009/2010 season with a lot of promising young faces including newly drafted defenseman phenom Victor Hedman and newly acquired free agents David Backes and Ryan Kesler. General Manager Nos had this to say...

We're increasingly happy with our farm progression and newly added pieces to the San Jose Sharks roster. We're hoping our vets Zdeno [Chara] and Chris [Pronger] will aid in developing our younger defensemen, Zach Bogosian who is very much in the mold of Chris and Victor Hedman who has the build of Zdeno. Very much similar types. It was tough cutting them from the team this year because they're so immensely talented but I'm sure we'll see some call ups during the year. They'll get their chance and are huge pieces to our future defensive core. We're also extremely happy to add David [Backes] and Ryan [Kesler] to our club, Ryan is the type of guy you win championships with. David is seen to us as the next big thing, in the mold of a Dustin Brown but with more offensive upside. We have a lot of players ready to make a big impact this year.

When asked about the lack of movement and quiet trade front General Manager Nos had this to say...

It's been a little quiet, I'm mostly surprised by the lack of interest most managers seem to harbor. It's not like we have to make any moves, I think that's clear just by looking at our roster. We're fired up and ready to go. It's other teams that should be kicking our tires, not the other way around. We have made some moves, mostly small farm trades that don't get too much attention but we did add Teemu [Selanne] which we're really excited about. We feel even at his age that he can add tremendously to our team. He's said this will be his last season so we're happy to have him this year and feel very fortunate. He can still go, even beyond this year if he decides to lace 'em back up. He's a special kind of talent that I hope some of our younger guys can learn from.

When asked about troubled winger Nikolai Zherdev General Manager Nos had this to say...

Nikolai [Zherdev] was somebody we thought of as an elite talent that hadn't quite gotten there. He has the tools but needs a good core group to work with in order to succeed and build his confidence as well as his character. There's been talk of him going to the KHL which would be a big loss to us as an organization since we spent quite a bit to get him here but we're confident he'll choose to stay and if not we'll be just fine without him.

The 2009/2010 season begins October 1st.

Newly Acquired Development Team

San Jose Sharks Owner/President/GM Nos has announced the Vancouver Giants as the team's new Development Team. He had no further comment and was in a rush to catch a Tab Hunter double bill.

STEVEN STAMKOS has been acquired by the SAN JOSE SHARKS!!!



In a trade sure to send shock waves through the NAFHL, the franchise has acquired an elite star at the expense of several long time highly valued Sharks. At the request of GM Nos Winona Ryder has been procured to conduct this interview.

Winona: Why did you target Steven Stamkos?

Nos: He's one of the best players in the world. Top 2.

W: You paid quite a price, how do you explain that to your fan base?

N: It was incredibly tough to give up every one of those guys. I love how Logan, Jeff, Ryan and David play the game and I thank them for everything they did for us. They're so passionate, dedicated and skilled. It was becoming difficult to handle so many high profile players, it wasn't feasible for us to keep everybody happy and on board. Things were getting crowded. I think our fans can understand that, especially considering the player that will suit up for the Sharks come October. I think that will make it easier.

W: How do you feel this effects your team's depth?

N: It certainly takes a hit. I think that's obvious. We have a lot of work to do to fill out the rest of the roster. We're going to need our farm to step up in a big way and there needs to be focus come draft time. We're looking for picks, trading partners in that regard. I feel I've built an incredibly strong core that's young and is prepared to compete forever. That's the goal. I wouldn't put the team at risk. We're the best in the world and we'll remain the best in the world.

W: You mention your farm team stepping up, who are you looking at to shine?

N: We're looking at Subban, Henrique and Couturier to have big years. They'll have some pressure on them, nothing they can't handle. Also Carl [Hagelin] is immensely talented, I love his game, lots of speed, great hands. As far as others that haven't quite made an impact at the NHL level, I'm looking at Mikael Granlund to be a major player. As well as Justin Schultz, just out of college, he's such an intelligent player. Our back end looks great going forward, Dougie Hamilton could also make some noise.

W: How do you feel the rest of the league, players, GM's, owners will react to this blockbuster?

N: Blockbuster, it is a blockbuster isn't it Winona? I never think of things in that way, I don't know. Blockbusters are always fun. It might kick some GM's into gear for the off-season. If I had to say though, I would assume they'd be upset. Or maybe excited, it's a bit of a landscape change. As far as the players I think everybody is really excited, especially our team.

W: Have you talked to Steven Stamkos yet?

N: I've talked to Steven. We knew about this deal ahead of time, it took weeks of negotiation with Scott, the GM of the Maple Leafs. It was quite a back and forth, I have the utmost respect for Scott and the Maple Leafs franchise, I hope to meet them in the playoffs, but yeah...it was just a matter of getting the paperwork all legal, at the right time, once finalized I had a chat with Steven. He's such a delight, he's so young too I can't even believe he's only 22, one of the most enthusiastic intelligent people I've had the pleasure to talk with. The way he thinks the game, the way he plays, I think he can make our entire team better...just to be around him.

W: Will you win the Championship for a third year in a row, fourth for the franchise?

N: Yes.

W: Can you tell us anything else?

N: You were a delight Winona.

W: It was my pleasure, I assure you.

The San Jose Sharks have just appointed Zach Parise the new alternate captain for the club. Long standing alternate Jarome Iginla will graciously step down. The team would also like to thank Jarome for his tireless efforts to bring 3 Championships to the city and will continue to rely on his efforts going forward.

Zach Parise had this to say, "I'm overjoyed to be added to such a legendary stable of leaders. The Sharks have my unwavering dedication, I'll make it my mission, nay duty, to add further Championships to our already impressive legacy. We'll never be done. You have me until my last breath."

After much deliberation through the summer months the San Jose Sharks have named long time Shark Rick Nash the new alternate captain for the club. GM Nos followed up the announcement with this glowing endorsement of Nash, "He's a special kind of player, skilled, cerebral, dominant. If I were to have made it, Rick Nash would be the player I'd want to of become."

Rick Nash had this to say, "I'm overwhelmed, this is the greatest honor of my career. To be involved with such an elite group of men and to be called upon as a leader, I'm going to do my absolute best with the added responsibility and lead by example. If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles an hour, you're going to see some serious shit."
