To ATL: Patrick Kane and Kari Lehtonen
To BOS: Ales Hemsky and Evgeni Nabokov
The first thing that jumps out at you when looking at this trade is, wow Boston dealt Patrick Kane? Atlanta almost automatically walks away with this trade as the winner being that they get what will most likely turn out to be a perinnial 85+ pt player in Kane
While they do give up Evgeni Nabokov who is a 70+ starter and will get you anywhere from 35 to 40 wins for the next 2 or 3 seasons for sure and probably beyond that. ATL also sheds themselves from the enigma that is Ales Hemsky, all that potential and yet it hasn't been turned into an impressive NHL player yet. Don't get me wrong Hemsky will get you pleanty of assists along with the ocassional goal but until this player learns to shoot the puck more he won't top 75 pts. This trade will have to wait a few years to have a winner picked out(that is if Boston doesn't pick up a 90pt guy and Atlanta doesnt snag another 40 win goalie somwhere else), Kane after all only has 1 season under his belt, Hemsky still has the potential to be a perennial 90pt guy, and Lehtonen has the possiblity to be a 40 win guy.
As for immediate impact the trade is a draw in my opinon. Atlanta gets another scoring threat but at the cost of a very good goalie where they seem to lack stats over the last season. Boston gains that goalie but at the cost of an extreamly high potential player in Kane who will be a 90pt guy in this league as soon as next season.
Depending on how the Waiver draft goes for these to teams could of course sway how this trade goes down in the books. If Atl finds a way to replace Nabokov then they walk away the winner here. I dont feel that Boston could gain anything in the waiver draft that could replace Kanes output for this next season though.
Until next trade, this is Cappy signing off.
