League Awards + Extra Picks/Keepers

I can't remember if this has been discussed before but I was thinking of possibly adding some extra picks (or keepers) to teams that did certain things over the course of the season. This would further league involvement and allow some of the lower seeded teams to achieve something extra. I saw this at another team's site so I'll copy/paste and see if we can get a discussion going on which ideas may work for our league...

Awards

Stanley Cup Champions
-Awarded to the League Champion
*Will receive 1 extra keeper in addition to the 10.

Presidents Trophy
-Awarded to the Team that accumulates the most points during the regular season
*Will Receive an Additional Waiver Pick (26th Overall)

Art Ross Trophy
-Will be awarded to the team that owns the player that scores the highest amount of points on the season. (Tiebreaker G, A, PPP)
*Will receive an additional Waiver Pick after the 2nd Round (25th Overall)

Calder Memorial Trophy
-Will be awarded to the team that owns the real life Calder Award Winner
*Will receive an additional prospect pick after the 1st round (14th overall).

All-Star Award
-Awarded to the GM with the most player of the week awards at seasons end. Each week one skater and one goalie will be named as the players of the week. The skater will be player that has the most points that week in the league, if a player is benched those points will not count. (Tiebreaker, in order, G, A PPP, +/-, SOG, GWG, PIM). The goalie will be the goalie with the highest number of wins for the week. (Tiebreaker: SO, SV%, GAA). Prevents you from easily winning it with one good start.
*Will receiver an Additional prospect pick after the 1st round (13th overall).

Its a pretty good thought and definitely an idea worth discussing.

If we would decide to give out rewards, it should only be for team success, not individual player stats. Obviously, the two best examples are playoff and regular season champs. We could also give a prize to the team with the most goals, assists, or goalie wins at the end of the season. Doing stuff like that rewards GMs for building a quality team and being consistently good for the entire season.

Getting rewarded just because one player on your team did good doesn't prove anything besides the fact that you're lucky enough to have him on your team (whether by trade or draft). If you happen to have the league leader in goals on your team, you are already rewarded since he helps so much for your team's overall success. Basically, you shouldn't get rewarded twice (team-based reward & player stat awards) for doing the same thing.

Also, on a side note, Nos had a terrible criteria for judging the All-Star award. When you have 7 forward and 4 goalie stats contributing to your success, you can't just look at points and wins when saying who is the "best" that week. Is the guy who scored 0G, 8A, +2, 0 PIMs, 2 shots more valuable than a single guy who gets 1G, 1A, +23, 90 PIMs, 150 shots in a single week?

Personally, I think only regular season and playoff champs should deserve a reward. Nothing else since those two things are really the only things that should matter. However, we shouldn't be throwing out extra keeper slots like its candy. Maybe give the regular season champs an extra prospect pick and the playoff champs an extra waiver pick?

Keep in mind that these italicized items aren't my ideas but awards from another league. I just copy/pasted them here to fuel some discussion on creating our own. I agree that single player awards are lame, it should all be team oriented. Perhaps even giving the consolation bracket winning team an extra waiver pick or something to increase activity and interest within the bottom half of the league. Or anything else you can think of.

I like the idea of having an extra keeper slot for something that your team does. And agree with the 2 of you in that we shouldn't have individual awards gain anything. The idea of consolation brackett winners getting an extra waiver pick is a good one in my opinion. Then something for the league winner and then the regular season winner.
Maybe something like this:

League Championship : Extra Keeper Slot

League winner (regular season) : extra waiver

Consolation Winner : Prospect Pick
