Markus Naslund RetiresNew York Rangers forward Markus Naslund announced his retirement today, ending his memorable 15-year National Hockey League career, which included a Lester B. Pearson Award (2003), five NHL All-Star Game appearances (1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004) and three NHL All-Star First Team selections (2002, 2003 and 2004). "I would like to sincerely thank Glen Sather and the New York Rangers for giving me the opportunity this past season in New York," said Naslund. "I would also like to thank the Vancouver Canucks and all of their fans for their support over the 11-plus seasons I was a part of their organization, as well as to the Pittsburgh Penguins where I began my NHL career." rangers.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=421384Markus Naslund is retiring and an announcement to make it official is described as "imminent". A report in the Sunday edition of the New York Post broke the story and included speculation that the Rangers may have intended to buy out the 35-year-old forward, which may have contributed to his decision to retire. Sources say the notion of buying Naslund out of the final year of his contract with New York was never proposed. Naslund made his decision following the Rangers' first round loss to the Washington Capitals and informed his teammates before the team disbanded for the offseason. His decision to walk away is based on his dissatisfaction with his game and the fact he isn't able to play at the standard he considers to be acceptable. www.tsn.ca/columnists/darren_dreger/?id=277471
