Yeah, what? I instantly thought Markus won this one. Derrick needs a goalie so he targets the Minnesota Wild goalie? Going into the year with him and the dizzy Jonas Hiller? (yikes) Minnesota just lost their best defenseman, who else do they have? ...? It's going to be a nightmare for the 33-year-old Backstrom. On the flip side you have the 23-year-old Pavelec, similar stats last season, 10 years younger, playing for the new Winnipeg Jets franchise with Enstrom, Byfuglien, Hainsey, Oduya, Bogosian on the back end. Pavelec is talented, young, and in a much better position to succeed than Backstrom. Error (Ehrhoff) has only ever been fantasy relevant on the Canucks. We'll see what he can bring to the Sabres, for a team rebuilding I'd much rather have Elliott, even if he's unproven. This was the perfect sell high move. I also think Kevin Poulin is a lot more talented than Jack Campbell, Campbell took a step backwards last season, struggled, while Poulin showed he could stick in the NHL even on a weaker rebuilding team. The picks help even it out a little bit for Derrick but I think he still loses big time. The most concerning is his goaltending tandem going into next season. That's not a championship tandem. I thought Markus evaluated the talent perfectly. FYI, I just jinxed Markus.

Pavelec is talented, young, and in a much better position to succeed than Backstrom. Regarding Pavelec he's certainly young and talented but I'm pretty sure Ottawa got the more stable option for a championship contending team next season. Pavelec still has some issues with consistency and has a habit of going on hot and cold streaks. Having to play in front of a demanding Winnipeg crowd might also bring some extra pressure next year and having to to travel absolutely huge miles for away games won't help either. Backstrom isn't getting any younger or healthier though. Regarding Poulin and Campbell well. The thing is, Poulin is certainly closer to a starting role in NYI than Campbell who could easily take 5 years before we see him in the NHL. Now Derrick, with the amazing goalie depth that he has in the farm system can afford that kind of wait. I can't. Ehrhoff is obviously the superior option to Elliot for at least the next couple of years and is a player who's often underrated. However after the Liles trade there's a good chance we might see Elliot step into his future PPQB role sooner than expected. Regarding the picks Ottawa clearly got the best of it with the 12th overall waiver, but the package of picks I got should fetch a pretty nice return in the upcoming drafts aswell. Overall, I feel it's a rather balanced trade and I'm pretty suprised with the amount of flack it's been getting here. People should see the amazing trade offers I've been getting for some of the blue chip wingers in the Carolina system. Accepting one of those would certainly prove the point of a bad trade.

FYI, I just jinxed Markus. Dont worry Nos, with a healthy Parise and Crosby scoring the points and the ever reliable Luongo continuing to play like he did during the last regular season there's no reason why the San Jose Sharks wouldn't be holding the championship trophy next season again! PS. Counterjinxed.

Its always tough to judge trading older, proven guys for younger, more promising guys. Time will tell who won the deal. Good luck to both sides!
