10. Minnesota
Drafted: R.J. Umberger, Tomas Plekanec, Matt Moulson, Jay Bouwmeester, Stephen Weiss, Eric Cole, Kimmo Timonen, Jason Arnott, Mike Knuble, Filip Kuba
Comments: Missing every single pick in the Waiver Draft greatly depreciates each picks value and it clearly shows. 2011 was the deepest Waiver Draft ever, and not to come away with a top-tier forward, defense man, or goalie is very disappointing for this franchise.
Grade: D-
T-8. Detroit
Drafted: Johan Franzen, Ray Whitney, Niklas Kronwall, Marc Savard, Bryan McCabe
Comments: All reports indicate that Marc Savard's career is over. Johan Franzen is a borderline keeper. In a very deep draft, nothing of substantial value was gained.
Grade: D+
T-8. Boston
Drafted: Mike Smith, Ryan Whitney, Joffrey Lupul, Rick Dipietro, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Troy Brouwer
Comments: The only note-worthy addition here is Ryan Whitney. Mike Smith is a huge question mark but should be the starter in Phoenix.
Grade: D+
7. Toronto
Drafted: Andrew Ladd, Brian Gionta, Dan Cleary , Jussi Jokinen, Stephane Robidas, Antoine Vermette
Comments: Andrew Ladd could turn into a nice keeper forward. Beyond that though, there isn't too much to be excited about here.
Grade: C-
6. Washington
Drafted: Patrik Elias, Dwayne Roloson, Clarke MacArthur, Joe Corvo, Dustin Penner, Matt Carle, Brooks Laich
Comments: Elias has always silently been one of the most valuable contributors in fantasy hockey and should be good for 60+ points here, but is he keeper worthy? MacArthur is a solid pick up, but only time will tell his value.
Grade: C+
T-4. Colorado
Drafted: Patric Hornqvist, Evgeni Nabokov, Daniel Alfredsson, David Perron, Sergei Gonchar, Milan Hejduk, Bryan Little, Sam Gagner
Comments: The most exciting additions here include Bryan Little and Sam Gagner. Beyond these two every single other selection is a huge question mark. Alfredsson (back), Perron (concussion/not practicing), Gonchar (not his old self). This strategy could pay huge dividends by season's end though.
Grade: B-
T-4. Calgary
Drafted: Mikko Koivu, Brent Seabrook, Ryan Callahan, Rene Bourque, Anton Babchuk, Andrew Brunette
Comments: Nothing too flashy here, but Calgary adds Koivu, Seabrook, and Callahan who all contribute nicely to the peripheral stats of fantasy hockey, making them valuable additions. Brunette could put up solid numbers in Chicago as well, making him a nice secondary scoring forward.
Grade: B-
T-3. Ottawa
Drafted: Niklas Lidstrom, Brandon Dubinsky, Jose Theodore, Blake Wheeler, Justin Williams, Sheldon Souray, Anton Khudobin, Scott Clemmensen, Iiro Tarkki
Comments: Blake Wheeler ans Justin Williams both have a shot of going for 60+ points given the environment in which they both play. Souray is boom or bust, but Lidstrom is there to provide a fair amount of point from the blue line. Late round goalie picks solidify a stranglehold on the future of several NHL teams in the crease.
Grade: B
T-3. Carolina
Drafted: Mikhail Grabovski, Devin Setoguchi, Tomas Fleischmann, Al Montoya, Mark Dekanich, Marek Zidlicky, Dennis Wideman, Wayne Simmonds, Chris Kunitz
Comments: Grabovski is slick and is annually one of the most underrated forwards in the league. Complimenting him nicely is Setoguchi who could thrive in his new home in Minnesota. Fleischmann was at a point per game last season (before injury) and could return there this season. Sneaky plays for Dekanich and Montoya (who could become starters) make this an impressive draft for the Hurricanes.
Grade: B
T-3. Winnipeg
Drafted: Michael Cammalleri, Ville Leino, Martin Brodeur, James Wisniewski, Tomas Kaberle, Jaromir Jagr, Dennis Seidenberg
Comments: The success or failure of this team rests on the shoulders of Martin Brodeur. Cammalleri, Leino, and Jagr all should provide 50+ points in a balanced scoring effort, while Wisniewski and Kaberle contribute 40 from the back end. Overall a very balanced draft for the Jets.
Grade: B
2. San Jose
Drafted: Alexander Edler, Simon Gagne, Chris Pronger, Devan Dubnyk, Alex Steen, Brad Boyes, Marc Staal
Comments: Edler stands to see increased point totals with the departure of Ehrhoff in Vancouver. If healthy, Pronger should return to 40+ as well. The wild cards here are Gagne in LA and Dubnyk (who can become a starter) in Edmonton. Marc Staal could be a sleeper pick. From a value stand point, the Sharks made the most of its picks, but drafting 3 defense men when it already had a log jam on the back end isn't necessarily the smartest of plans.
Grade: B+
1. Anaheim
Drafted: Scott Hartnell, Mike Ribeiro, Teemu Selanne, Alex Tanguay, Steve Ott, Kevin Bieksa, Mike Fisher, Joni Pitkanen, Antero Niittymaki (Josh Harding), Eric Fehr
Comments: Hands down the best waiver draft of 2011. Anaheim was able to snag THREE 70 point forwards (Tanguay, Ribeiro, Selanne) while adding a plethora of PIMS and secondary scoring from both the forward and defense positions (Hartnell, Ott, Bieksa, Pitkanen). Ott stands to see an increase in points/ice time with the departure of Richards in Dallas, and Mike Fisher should center line one in Nashville.
