The much anticipated annual waiver draft grades are here. New this season is the inclusion of the " Strength of Draft (SOD) Power Score" which the list is ordered by. The SOD Power Score is a mathematical model that analyzes the values of the drafted players over a 3 year span and as a sum, provides a range value of the drafted players (low-high) as a decimal figure. The higher the number, the better. Rookies without data (as indicated by an asterisk are not counting in the total). Age/Future projections/unused picks/team needs are not accounted for in the SOD Power Score.
Additionally, each team has received a "Grade." This grade is determined based on opinion, and is heavily affected by team needs/value of pick and not so much individual player value.
Without further adieu...
2012 NAFHL Waiver Grades
12. Boston
Drafted: Mark Streit, Josh Harding, Evgeni Nabokov, Matt Carle, Brandon Dubinsky, Mikkel Boedker, *Anton Khudobin, Jay Bouwmeester, Troy Brouwer
Unused Picks: 0
Comments: Boston added some much needed depth at the goaltender position snagging another starter in Nabokov, a future starter in Harding, and a solid back-up in Khudobin. Boston's forward selections aren't out of this world but have some upside and will help out a great deal with the peripheral stats. Could use another Center or two.
SOD Power Score: 4.08 - 4.31
Grade: B+
11. Washington
Drafted: Erik Cole, Pascal Dupuis, Braydon Coburn, Bryan Little, Antoine Vermette, Kyle Brodziak, Nick Foligno
Unused Picks: 0
Comments: Did not address its goal tending issues via the waiver draft, and doesn't really have much to show for it. There should be an increase in goals and peripheral stats from last year, but overall lackluster.
SOD Power Score: 4.31 - 5.37
Grade: D
10. Minnesota
Drafted: Ondrej Pavelec, Mike Ribeiro, Tyler Myers, Martin Havlat, Milan Michalek, Joni Pitkanen, Viktor Stalberg, Mikhail Grabovski
Unused Picks: 4
Comments: Good mix of forwards and defensemen who will help out in a number of categories, but the risk of injury increases ten-fold. Minnesota was able to snag prized free agent goalie Ondrej Pavelec in the 1st Round and flip him for Datsyuk.
SOD Power Score: 4.89 - 5.87
Grade: B-
9. San Jose
Drafted: John Carlson, Daniel Alfredsson, Dan Hamhuis, Patric Hornqvist, Sam Gagner, Ales Hemsky, Ryan Whitney, Colin Wilson, Damien Brunner*, David Booth, Chris Pronger
Unused Picks: 0
Comments: Too many "reclamation projects," too many injury-prone players, and too many Oilers. Not enough "win-now" mentality. Snagging Carlson was nice whereas he should bounce back, and Brunner has some upside, but overall, not enough quality here to substantiate the quantity.
SOD Power Score: 4.91 - 5.14
Grade: C
8. Colorado
Drafted: Nathan Horton, David Krejci, Patrik Berglund, Radim Vrbata, Filip Kuba
Unused Picks: 2
Comments: Krejci and Vrbata will boost offensive numbers and Horton could be a monster if he is fully healed from the concussion he suffered this past season. Berglund has yet to meet expectations placed upon him as a highly touted prospect and Kuba has to prove his worth without Karlsson. Two missed picks leaves Colorado without a full roster.
SOD Power Score: 4.97 - 6.09
Grade: C-
7. Calgary
Drafted: Tobias Enstrom, Michael Del Zotto, Alex Steen, Teddy Purcell, Jiri Hudler, Mark Giordano, Brenden Morrow
Unused Picks: 3
Comments: The quality of players Calgary selected was great ultimately securing 3 of the top defensemen in the draft while attempting to address its lack of goal scoring issue. The strength of this draft depends on the health of Morrow.
SOD Power Score: 5.08 - 5.90
Grade: A-
6. Carolina
Drafted: T.J. Oshie, David Clarkson, Steve Ott, Christian Ehrhoff, Erik Johnson, Roman Cervenka, Tyler Kennedy
Unused Picks: 1
Comments: Carolina obviously had one goal in mind: improving its Pims/peripheral stats it felt it lacked. Clarkson and Ott will certainly improve the aforementioned, but selecting 3 centers while already rostering 4 (toal of 7) wasn't exactly the smartest game plan. I suspect farm transactions to be made, but assumptions can't figure into analysis.
SOD Power Score: 5.33 - 5.63
Grade: C+
5. Winnipeg
Drafted: Danny Briere, Andrew Ladd, Stephen Weiss, Chris Kunitz, Justin Williams, Jason Garrison, Brent Seabrook, John-Michael Liles, Devin Setoguchi
Unused Picks: 2
Comments: Soft, soft, soft. Winnipeg loaded up on offensive talent but did very little to address its lack of pim/peripheral stats or its weak defensive core.
SOD Power Score: 5.39 - 5.94
Grade: C
4. Anaheim
Drafted: Brian Elliott, Kris Versteeg, Derek Roy, Kyle Okposo, Martin Erat, Brooks Laich, Kyle Quincey, Jussi Jokinen
Unused Picks: 0
Comments: Defense wins championships. Unfortunately Anaheim didn't get the memo and is stuck only 3 on its roster. Additionally, Anaheim managed to snag Elliott, but way too early. Very poor value-per pick because of missed picks and ill-advised selections.
Power Score: 5.43 - 5.93
Grade: D-
3. Detroit
Drafted: Kimmo Timonen, Niklas Kronwall, Sheldon Souray, Ray Whitney, Ian White, Mike Fisher, Simon Gagne, Marc-Andre Bergeron, Rich Peverley
Unused Picks: 0
Comments: Defense wins championships. Fortunately, Detroit got the memo and was able to snag 5 in the waiver draft. Both Timonen and Kronwall (and to a lesser extent White) will be relied upon heavily this season. Fisher is a nice multi-cat guy, as is Souray and Peverley. Whitney should flirt with last years totals. The real key to value is the health of Gagne. Boom or Bust.
SOD Power Score: 5.56 - 5.71
Grade: A-
2. Toronto
Drafted: Patrik Elias, Martin Brodeur, Jaromir Jagr, Drew Stafford, Dennis Seidenberg, James Wisniewski, Alex Tanguay
Unused Picks: 0
Comments: WAY too many RW's rostered and not enough...anything else. Except Goalies. Interesting enough Toronto took Brodeur (a 3rd heavy GP starter) when it already had Miller and Bryzgalov. Adding Elias, Jagr, and Tanguay will bolster offensive totals...if they make it off the bench.
SOD Power Score: 5.62 - 5.94
Grade: C-
1. Ottawa
Drafted: Scott Hartnell, Teemu Selanne, Lubomir Visnovsky, Dennis Wideman, Tomas Plekanec, Olli Jokinen, Martin Hanzal, *Viktor Fasth, Jamie McGinn
Unused Picks: 0
Comments: I wish someone else would opine here.
SOD Power Score: 6.17 - 6.62
Grade: A
