I just wanted to point out that I think Derrick forgot to put asterisks next to his awards in the 2007/2008 Awards Thread.
As I'm sure many of you have noticed, there have been asterisks placed next to my team's name on all of my records and championship. I understand that this was because I decided to use my full roster to its potential during the playoffs. I decided to recall/send down players that were on my farm team (many of whom I have had since the inaugural draft and weren't some random FA grab) during the playoffs. At the time, I took actions that were legal and allowed by the league. If you did not like my actions, I can understand your argument and your point of view. This post is not to defend myself for that decision, so please do not turn an argument towards this subject.
This post is about fairness and hypocrisy. Some people have been alarmed by the "dishonesty, shadiness, and disrespect in this league," so I think I should address it.
Derrick recently told me that, in his opinion, "there is an asterisk beside [my] name because [my] records are tainted and were obtained in a sketchy fashion and by means that (come June 1) are now fully prohibited." If this is the case, I would like to ask why isn't there an asterisk by all of Derrick's records/awards?
I just want to say straight up that I cannot take credit for coming up with my "playoff strategy" and that I was inspired by someone else. I don't know if many of you caught this, but back in week 2 and week 3, Derrick was recalling/sending down (in a "streaming"-like fashion) players from his farm team (specifically Anze Kopitar and Pascal Leclaire). Noticeable, these instances occurred in key situations for Derrick when he was in important matchups with two of the top teams in the league (SJ & Columbus). I figured since the commissioner was allowed to do this, then why can't I? Recently, I received information from another GM that spoke with Derrick during the playoffs and Derrick acknowledged his "streaming" Kopitar/Leclaire, but that he "only did it a few times."
Right before our playoff matchup, I sent a PM to Derrick proposing my plans. A summary of his response was that he'll make some offseason modifications to address this situation in the future. So what does Derrick do next? Does he take his own advise? No. He starts recalling/sending down players from his farm team, just like before.
I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts on this situation is. I feel that I didn't do anything wrong (although I'll admit others may find it questionable), so I don't think I deserve to have an asterisk by my name. If the rest of the league prefers that my championship and records be marked with an asterisk, I'm fine by that and I'll live. However, if I do deserve to have my records marked, I believe that Derrick (who did the exact same thing and even came up with the concept in the first place) should have his records marked with an asterisk, too.

You sure did, and lets not forget your repeated disregard of both the message posted on Yahoo:
Restricted Rosters by: the_muffin_man101 (Ottawa Senators) Mar 11 3:30am Just a friendly reminder. "Restricted" rosters allow you to call up players from your farm in case of injury. This is a PRIVILEGE, and can easily be taken away should it be abused in accordance with the "streaming players" guideline.
Thanks.
...and the PM sent via the NAFHL forum.
Message sent on Mar 11, 2008, 1:15am Im not sure about the 2 day waiver rule change I would have to check. However, it should not be an issue whereas GM's should only be calling players up/sending players down in case of injury. Just as "streaming" would not be allowed with free agents, it is also not allowed with farm players. This "privilege" should not be abused.
Not that it matters, but lets take a look at the whopping six times Pascal Leclaire has been sent down all season over the span of seven months so we can lay rest to this silly streaming claim shall we?

And just so there isn't any confusion over my opponents each of those times they are as follows:
Columbus (Week 2) October 8-14 San Jose (Week 3) October 15-21 Montreal (Week 4) October 22-28 Atlanta (Week 7) November 12-18 Toronto (Week 9) November 26- December 2 Winnipeg (Week 19) February 4-10
...way to present your "evidence" as unbiased as possible. *note the sarcasm* Take the smaller sample size of two "top ranked teams," and just forget about the four that didn't make the playoffs. Not that it matters either way, but it certainly is not consistent in showing a pattern of what you are claiming.
Oh and by the way, how many times was Leclaire injured this season? Knee? Head? Flu? Groin? Some of us actually use the farm system how it was intended to be used during the year. Most notably, IN CASE OF INJURY. But i'm sure that didn't have anything to do with why I was sending Leclaire (or Eclaire as stated above) did it?
Via Yahoo Game Log: (most recently)
November 26-December 3 (Injury) January 31-February 10 (Injury)
Which brings us to the real reason of this thread. I can not sit here for one second and believe that you are trying to an any way compare my actions, or any other managers actions to those of yours in the playoffs. Look no further than the numbers. You made 100 moves. ONE HUNDRED. That is more than Vancouver, Calgary, Atlanta, Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, Buffalo, and Columbus combined all season, with 7 moves to spare. 50% of those 100 moves coming in the final 3 weeks of play. YES, this is unacceptable.
The impact of calling up players and sending them down during a span of 7 months (the year) isn't in any way comparable to constantly streaming of players for 3+ weeks straight in order to win a championship. Once again, its simple math. A honost manager with a roster of 19 vs. a streamer whose roster totals somewhere in the mid to upper 20's. DUH. I don't care how good of a team you have or how skilled of a manager you are, you can't overcome those odds. I don't care how you try to justify it, it is unfair, cheating, frowned upon, and highly unclassy. Not every rule can be spelled out perfectly and not everything can be prepared for which is why the Commissioner clause is in the rulebook. Just because something is not stated, does not mean it isnt WRONG. Stop looking for every loophole as means to cheat, and then even more ridiculous means of trying to cover it up. This dishonesty is clearly becoming an issue, and action must be taken. Call me a "nazi" or whatever you will, but I, like this league, am only as fun and as open as its members.
Just stop.

Thanks for side-stepping the purpose of my post. Honestly, I don't care about your random adds/drops throughout the season. I talked about two specific instances where you "streamed" players and you respond by putting me on the defensive. Nice. I'm not trying to debate what I did. I'm trying to say you did the same thing and you should have "asterisks" on your records, too. Here is the incident I'm talking about from the yahoo records (you know, where ALL the moves are tracked):
Oct 13 2:03am Anze Kopitar (LA - C) Drop Oct 13 2:03am Pascal Leclaire (Cls - G) Add Oct 14 12:35am Pascal Leclaire (Cls - G) Drop Oct 14 12:39am Anze Kopitar (LA - C) Add Oct 17 1:51am Anze Kopitar (LA - C) Drop Oct 17 1:51am Pascal Leclaire (Cls - G) Add Oct 18 12:46am Pascal Leclaire (Cls - G) Drop Oct 18 12:46am Anze Kopitar (LA - C) Add Oct 19 11:56pm Anze Kopitar (LA - C) Drop Oct 21 1:14am Pascal Leclaire (Cls - G) Add Oct 22 10:37pm Pascal Leclaire (Cls - G) Drop Oct 22 10:37pm Anze Kopitar (LA - C) Add
You streamed 2 players during a big matchup against San Jose. You dropped one guy when they didn't play and picked up the other. Plain and simple. You were the first person in the league to "stream players." Plain and simple. Just because it was only two guys doesn't make you any more innocent. In fact, it just makes you that much more shady. By trying to cover it up you're just making yourself look that much worse. Then, you did the same in the playoffs. You blast me for making adds/drops during the playoffs and then you do the same thing yourself. All of a sudden your moves don't count?
Again, this thread isn't supposed to be about what I did, its about how you're holding other people to higher standards than yourself. All I'm trying to say is if you put an asterisk next to my name then you should do the same thing to your team.

This is kind of a petty argument.... It wasn't classy for Mark to do what he did, but it was within the rules of the game, and rules Derrick created at that. The records are his, and I don't think anyone is disputing that. I guess it might make sense to let the asterisk stand though, since Mark had many more games played than anyone else did or will under the new rules (I assume). It's like Brodeur setting the single season wins record in 2006-07. He didn't cheat, but the rules at the time worked to his advantage (in that case, the addition of the shootout). The record is his, but even Brodeur will admit that it has diminished value since he has the advantage of no tied games. Also, I say we should nominate Mark for the "Lou Lamoriello Award" for exploiting the rules of the league as best he could

i'm fine with with having an asterisk next to my name. i'm just wondering why derrick doesn't have one next to his. he did the same thing as me (except he did it both during the regular season and in the playoffs), but only my name has an asterisk. i'm just wondering why this "sanction" only applies to me and its "forgotten" that derrick did this, too?
derrick scored only 2 more goals than the 2nd place team, had 3 more goalie wins than the 3rd place team, and had a 0.02 GAA lead over the 4th place team. those are just a couple of examples of how close some categories were with him. i'm sure his "streaming" of players had *absolutely zero* impact on some of these accomplishments. shouldn't derrick's records have an asterisk if mine have one, too?
also derrick, so you're saying that its cool to "stream" players in normal, big matchups just as long as its not in the playoffs against you? because thats what i got out of your reply. and if you were so adamant about this rule during the season, then why did you stream kopitar/leclaire earlier and then you started streaming your farm team again in the playoffs. kind of hard to take the "high road" when you're guilty of the charge yourself. i'd bet money this would be a non-issue if you would've won our playoff matchup.

I think the thing is that you did it during the playoffs and he did it in the regular season where there are no rules about how often you can call up players from the farm team. Thats the point of having a strong farm team with prospects on it when you need them you can call them up but for the playoffs its different imo
which is why we agreed on restricted rosters for the playoffs

He did it against 3 opponents (2 in regular season, 1 in playoffs). I did it against 3 opponents (3 in playoffs). Just a side note, restricted playoff rosters included using farm players.

Yeah, this is pretty much a joke, it was within the rules and does not deserve an asterisk in any way. Disapproval is not cause for asterisks. The whole "I only did it against him because he did it first!" argument is...wait, haven't we heard that argument elsewhere? Hmm, imagine that, in this instance it's the initiator being punished and in another instance it's the retaliation that's being punished! Consistency, I swear this league is actually turning out to be more like the real NHL than I thought. If people have such a problem with streaming I say apply a moves limit of about 50 for the year.
Congrats Mark, you won it fair and square.

Nos your sounding more and more like a pissed off cheerleader that is no longer on the top of the pyramid Fantastic insight Chris, as usual. How am I pissed off that I'm not on top? I'm the only one that's gracefully congratulated Mark on his legit win. I'm pissed off because of the hypocrisy in this league. Why don't you try to understand something before making judgements?

Im just calling it how I see it. I did try to see your point when I was reading through all the post from yesterday but I just don't see what you don't understand. You benched players in order to have a higher spot in the draft. Its clear to see. You started your benching's at the beginning of the week BEFORE the leafs did.

You started your benching's at the beginning of the week BEFORE the leafs did. One insignificant body (which was an oversight) is not the same as benching impact players like Jagr and Drury, which is what got the ball rolling. Overlooking all of that, that argument is about a pick, not whether I'm "on top of the pyramid", so where does that comment come from? Nobody has given Mark the kudos and respect he deserves for winning the league after coming in last the previous year except for me. Anyway...

ok guys were combining two different issues one has been resolved and the other are simply awards the only one that really matters is the NAFHL Championship and mark you won it congrats, derr didnt so whats the difference if you have asterisks and he doesnt. The point I'm trying to make is that Derrick isn't holding himself to the same standards that he is holding everyone else is. I showed above that Derrick added/dropped Kopitar & Leclaire (a.k.a. "streamed" his farm team) and he added/dropped a lot of his farm team (Kopitar, Ladd, Johnson, Ryan, etc.) again during my playoff matchup with him. Check yahoo's add/drop records for Ottawa and it proves it. Derrick says I did something unethical/shady and he is diminishing my accomplishment by putting an asterisk on it. Derrick does the same thing as me and apparently it is forgivable/okay for him to do it? Why? That doesn't seem fair at all. I just want Derrick to admit he did exactly the same thing I did and I want both of us to be treated in the same way. Is this so unreasonable? Either both of us deserve asterisks or none of us do. That is the point I'm trying to make. I'll admit I "exploited" a rule, but it was legal to do so. Derrick even exploited this same rule and it isn't the first time he's exploited rules or done something "shady." Does everyone remember last year's new rule book? Derrick posted the new rules (with the prospect free agent clause he included and told nobody about) a day or so before June 1st. Then on June 1st, he signed a ton of prospects free agents and a lot of GMs were a little surprised/upset. Then, recently, Derrick traded for Budaj and Green (two players that spent the whole season on Winnipeg's main roster and just barely qualify to be minor leaguers) and sent them directly to the farm team. This "exploited" another rule to his advantage. In fact, this rule has been recently modified to specifically prevent it from happening again. It was a legal move at the time, but it definitely exploited a loop hole and let Derrick have two extra keeper players on is farm team that shouldn't have been able to be sent to the farm team without clearing waivers first. NOTE: I'm not bitching about these moves, I'm just trying to establish that Derrick has done some legal, but controversial moves in the past that could be considered exploiting rules. I just want to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and the same way in this league. Thats what this matter is about, in my opinion. Derrick is punishing me for "exploiting" a rule when he has exploited this same rule and has done things like that in the past. In fact, Derrick even threatened me in a recent PM that if he had his way he would strip me of my championship and all my season records. Meanwhile he does the same thing and he doesn't think he should receive any kind of punishment? I find that to be very scary.

Anyway... Top of Pyramid was just an analogy as in why a cheerleader gets pissed off relax if you want to get technical top of pyramid = 1st overall prospect pick

derrick, you make a very compelling argument when you ignore all the facts and skew things towards your point of view. of course, if i play more games than you i'll have more moves. bravo for stating the obvious. i don't know if you're ignoring what i'm saying or if you're still in denial of what you did, but you keep on dismissing the fact that you violated your own "unwritten rule" and don't care.
i guess you really want to turn this into a "who can make a longer post contest" by cutting and pasting a lot of yahoo stats. so here we go...
lets take a look at Boston vs Ottawa playoff matchup
Here is an exact log of all the players that were sent to the farm team and recalled from the farm team for the week of Mark vs Derrick (note: for everyone else that doesn't care about Derrick forcing me to spell out every little detail because he still denies doing anything wrong, skip to the bolded words at the end for a summary):

Mark's total moves = 29 Derrick's total moves = 27[/b]
You are correct Derrick, I am so much worse than you. Of course I make more moves later on since I lasted longer into the playoffs, but this comparison shows you did the exact same thing (adding/dropping players) for almost the exact same number of times when we faced each other. How can you account for making 27 moves in 1 week and not admit "streaming" players? But let's only punish Mark because nobody can speak out against Derrick's almighty word, right?
I just think its a pathetic thing that you're turning the job of commissioner into your personal tool to "dish out some revenge" for losing against me in the playoffs because you're bitter that your "godlike" team choked for the second straight year. If you want to punish me for making a legal move, then you have to punish yourself because you exploited the exact same rule. GO AHEAD AND KEEP AN ASTERISK BY MY NAME. BUT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR DOING THE EXACT SAME THING THAT I DID AND PUNISH/SANCTION YOURSELF, TOO.
Derrick, a)if you punish me, then you should punish yourself for violating your own unwritten rule OR b)declare you are a hypocrite and are exempt from the league rules that everyone else must follow.
those are the only two options that i can think of that will rectify this situation. i'm curious how much longer derrick will think he is "above the rules" and what else derrick will think of doing if he gets away with this.
i'm asking the rest of the league (note: please respond with your thoughts... derrick and i have gone back and forth enough with each other), shouldn't derrick follow the rules and punish himself if he's punishing me? derrick said nos violated a rule and took away his #1 pick, derrick said i violated a "rule" and put asterisks next to my accomplishments, but i ask what happens when derrick violates a rule? who will watch the watchmen? we need some league feedback on this situation.

i forgot to say, i don't know if anyone else noticed this, but derrick has been very dishonest and sneaky in his "facts."
in his first response, he "proves" that pascal leclaire has been only added/dropped 6 times the entire season when that is not a fact. in his second post, he compares all of my moves (which include adding/dropping farm players and dropping injured players) to his moves against SJ in the regular season while conveniently ignoring all the adding/dropping he did in the playoffs (which i repeatedly mentioned before).
i'm just looking forward to how else Derrick can ignore what he did, cover up facts, and try to skew data in order to make it look like he did nothing wrong.
please understand, this topic is about Derrick trying to get away with something that he is punishing another person for. i don't care if he leaves my asterisk up if he admits he did what i did and accepts the same fate as mine.

Obviously I streamed players during the week against you in the playoffs, ONLY AFTER a warning for you to stop via the yahoo forum and a NAFHL PM, not to mention a farm transaction that reads "The Ottawa Senators are forced to call up..." These things sure sound like a person with malintent and dishonest notions.
What it boils down to is, nobody, including me is going to spend 7 long months of a season working their ass off to get to the playoffs to just give up and be walked all over because of a dishonest manager like yourself who decides to start streaming players.

Derrick,
So I guess you established that GMs can break "rules" (real ones or not) to retaliate against other GMs as long as they broke them first. I'll remember that for next season. Don't forget to put that in the new rules, too!
If you want to talk about dishonesty, I am just wondering why it was okay and 100% legal for you to stream some players against SJ in the season, but when somebody does it against your team you have to raise hell about it. You weren't "forced to call up..." players against SJ in the regular season, but you did anyways. You made 12 moves in 1 week and you don't even think thats a bit odd? You even used your yahoo commissioner powers to change Kopitar & Leclaire's waiver dates so you could continue to add/drop them almost everyday. I guess since you did this that makes it alright. Its good to know that since someone else did the same thing as you but only more times, you can try and distract the rest of the league of your guilt by pointing and punishing me. I'm glad to be of help.
Derrick, keep on trying to call me dishonest and a cheat. I know, and I hope I convinced/showed other GMs, that you were the one to create the strategy of adding/dropping farm players ("streaming"), you did it first, and you did it again in the playoffs. If anyone is dishonest its you for not admitting this.
-------------------- I guess I'll make this my last post since Derrick is too much of a hypocrite to admit his guilt and punish himself. I hope I showed the rest of the league that Derrick isn't as perfect and benevolent as he wants everyone to believe. I just hope he doesn't think he can get away with worse things and I can only pray he won't continue to exploit his own rules while punishing others.
Finally, I just wanted to thank Derrick for inspiring my playoff strategy that helped me win the championship. Without his creativity, dishonesty, and his ability to exploit league rules, I probably still would've won the championship, but not in such a dominating way. Thank you Derrick!
