So you're now comparing tragic untimely deaths with retirement? Sorry, that doesn't fly. If anyone deserves compensation it's the teams of players who died. Nothing even comes close to this kind of loss. I couldn't give a shit about players who choose to defect to Russia. Having said that I'm fine with compensation picks being given out but they should be given out before the draft takes place. All I'm saying is it should be set, not changed mid way, that's all.

I understand the argument. I think we all wish it could be set in stone, unfortunately with the real life free agency, arbitration hearings, and various other dates and procedures that are out of our hands, this is not always possible given when we have our waiver draft. The closest we can come to "set in stone" is to make a rule stating the waiver draft is subject to change given players leave for Russia, and just expect the pick to be made that current year unless the player announces his departure for Russia after when said pick would be made. A competing team should not be "punished" by having to wait a year to make a replacement pick simply because one of his keepers decides not to play in North America.

after some thought and hearing both of yas I think I like the way Derrick is conducting this, just think NOS if you have a player on your team that you keep and then before the season begins that players takes off for Russia.......would you think its fair to wait a full season to get another player to make up for the player that left? I do think however there should be something implemented in the rule book on how everything will be determined and I also think there should be Compensation given for players that leave the NHL for Russia(or any other possible league) and it should also cover deaths, But obviously not retirments. whats your thoughts on that Derr?

Hey Nos, look at it this way. I literally traded my 1st round waiver pick to Pittsburgh for an extra keeper slot for Hudler (he was my last keeper selection). Now, he's leaving for Russia. So, I basically traded away my 1st rd waiver pick for a pick at the end of the 3rd round. Does it really sound fair to wait until next year to get some sort of compensation when I was fully expecting to have Hudler in my lineup next year?

As I've already said, I'm fine with compensation picks for players leaving for Russia, what I'm not okay with is changing the draft mid way. When did Hudler decide to bolt anyway? I believe it was before August 1st, no? Shouldn't this have been announced and taken care of before the draft? I understand the need to replace a keeper though, especially for a contending team like Boston.

No, it's not 'fair', it's a raw deal for you but those are ultimately the breaks. If Zherdev decides to bolt to Russia I'll be out a 2nd rounder (16th overall) this year too. I'm cool with the compensation you would receive, I just feel changing the draft mid way is crap. ;D

As far as deaths of players, retirements, and otherwise are concerned, that is a league wide matter that will/would have to be discussed and voted on.
My personal opinion is if we compensate for the death of (kept) players, and the departure of (kept) players, then we must compensate for the retirement of (kept) players. Sure the death of an individual is far worse than a retirement or a signing in Russia, but speaking from a "business" perspective, all three scenarios punish the same. Loss of production you (GM) otherwise thought you would have for the upcoming season by way of forfeiture of a keeper slot. We must not appeal to sympathy or make this a moral issue.
Now, the deaths of prospects (Cherapanov, Bourdon) not "producing" in the NHL, however highly regarded, is a sensitive subject but it is all objective as to whether or not they would have actually panned out to begin with. Is it fair to compensate with an additional first round draft pick? How do we judge this? These are all things that would need to be discussed and mulled over before altering any existing rule or making a new one.

This is absurd. I had my reservations about this compensation business to begin with, but I talked myself into it with rhetoric similar to Mark's. Now I have to speak up with this prospect death talk. We're actually discussing compensating people for prospects that don't pan out. News Flash: They're prospects, not keepers. These are players who have no real value, only projected value, upside if you will. Should someone get compensation for a career ending injury to John Tavares? Why not include retirements? Not all retirements are forgone conclusions you know. Sudden retirement is a real possibility, just as is sudden injury, and sudden death. A certain amount of risk and the unknown is required in fantasy sports. It doesn't surprise me, however, that Nos is on board for these changes. I have never seen him take a principled stand on anything without at least a selfish undertone and most often with explicit selfish overtones. Nos is incapable of viewing a situation with as little bias possible and rendering an opinion for the objective benefit of the league.

Please, I don't even care for compensation for Cherepanov in the slightest. It was my choice, my pick, I'm happy to this day with my selection. It's unfortunate he had to die. Having said that, if we're giving out compensation for selfish players defecting to Russia then... You get the picture.

im sure there is some understanding the league could come up with.......
I feel it could look something like this: If a Player leaves to go play in a different league they would get compensation* If a Player prematurely retires they would get compensation(prematurely=before he is 30 or something)* If a Player Passes on they would get compensation.*,**
*=Compensation pick depends on there point totals from the previous season **=if no Full NHL season then if the deceased was selected within the top 6 of the last 4 drafts then the team would get a pick at the end of the 1st or 2nd (prospect), or at the end of the 4th rd(waiver), whichever the teams GM accepts.
Whats all your thoughts on something like that?
just a suggestion

Just saying. I don't think the Pens would be interested. Washington is a better fit for him. Although I'd take it just fine.

im confused your talking as if Zherdev is now staying in North America :S Yeah, he could still flee but I'm at least happy that he hasn't signed with a KHL club yet.

Did Kozlov announce that his contract in Russia is void and will be returning to the NHL?
